[ Reiner wakes up abruptly, instinctively jerking his face away from Jean’s grip when he’s felt the lack of air during his sleep. when he notices the other boy looking at him (or more like glaring at him) he tries his hardest to push his sleepiness away, prompting himself up on an elbow and rubbing his eyes with the other hand. ]
Jean?
[ Reiner’s voice is low and not only due to the fact that he’s just woken up. It’s late. Reiner can tell from the way the moon is shining bright from the only window in their bunker, the way that Bertholtd’s body next to him has already started contorting itself in one of those weird poses the other recruits will probably start talking about the following morning and the fact that Jean is risking talking to him at all when it’s not something he would usually do.

[ in truth, Reiner probably knows what Jean is talking about. while his three companions have decided to keep mostly to themselves (Annie is basically a loner, Jean isn’t much different from what Reiner’s noticed and the only reason quiet and reserved Bertholtd has any friends is because he sticks around Reiner most of the time), Reiner instead has decided to be as much part of the group as possible. he just thinks it makes the most sense. trying to mingle with the rest of the trainees, becoming their friend... who would suspect him if he’s everyone’s big brother? it’s probably cruel considering what they have to do (and what they have already done), but they have a mission and Reiner’s been set in completing it long ago.
and there is a part of him that enjoys it too, being their friend and sort-of-leader... like Marcel was to them in the past. but this is a thought Reiner doesn’t indulge much into.]
