[ A sharp whisper: ]

Don't act like you don't know.

[ He doesn't want to have to say it, and he can't, anyway. Not here, when they're still in the boys' dorm and any of the boys around them could hear. From a logical standpoint, Reiner's friendliness with the other recruits doesn't make any sense. These are the people they have hurt. Does Jean believe that they are the enemy? Perhaps he used to, because he didn't know anything about them and that's what people have been telling him for years, but now he's met them, and he can't think of the sweet boy who keeps sitting beside him as someone who could destroy the world. They aren't the enemy, but they will still die when these warriors start their next phase. They have to die, as difficult as the thought is, because it's the only way his mother and the families of Reiner, Annie and Bertholdt can live. It's bad to be getting so close to them.

There's also something else. The stinging feeling in his heart when he sees Reiner getting chummy with his new friends when Jean watches from the side. The resentment he feels when Reiner talks to Krista. There's a quick glance around to see if any of the other trainees are awake. Just as a precaution, Jean gives an alibi, speaking a little louder. ]

I need help with my hand-to-hand combat. You'll teach me, right?
