Character name: Tom Riddle
Fandom: Harry Potter
Timeline: Summer after his fifth year at Hogwarts.
Age: 16
~*Magical*~ abilites and strengths: Being a wizard, Tom knows many spells, curses, and hexes. He has a vast knowledge of magic, especially the Dark Arts, and it is said he is the most brilliant student at his school. He is able to use Legilimency, the art of seeing into others' minds, to an extent. In addition to this, he is also a Parselmouth, meaning that he can speak to snakes.
Appearance: Tom is often described as being incredibly handsome, a trait passed down from his father. Tall with black hair, dark eyes, and pale skin, he is able to charm many people. His attire is usually wizard robes or the Hogwarts uniform (slacks, a sweater, a dress shirt, and a tie).
Background/Personality: Tom Riddle was born of a witch and a muggle (non-magical) father on New Year's Eve in 1927. However, his father had left his mother when she was pregnant and she died soon after childbirth. An orphan, Tom was raised in a dreary muggle orphanage in London. Throughout his childhood, he experienced the typical discoveries of magical ability of young wizards and used his powers to his advantage. He experimented with controlling animals and moving objects with his mind, along with punishing the other orphans who treated him harshly. He was violent towards others, killing a child's pet rabbit by hanging it from the rafters and even traumatizing two children in a cave on a trip. Tom was also able to persuade others easily, able to subtly control them a bit with Legilimency when demanding things of them. Having always known he was special, Tom's suspicions were confirmed when Albus Dumbledore, a professor at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, visited to tell Tom he was a wizard at the age of eleven. Tom accepted the news eagerly and began to attend the school, which he came to consider home.
At Hogwarts, Tom adopted the guise of a poor but brilliant student, eager to learn. His looks and charm won the hearts of all the teachers with the exception of Dumbledore, who Tom despised and feared. Tom soon became the best student to have ever attended Hogwarts. In his fifth year at school, Tom opened the Chamber of Secrets, a place in the school that housed a deadly creature that sought out and killed those with muggle ancestry. However, when told that the school might have to be closed, Tom sealed off the Chamber of Secrets and blamed the murders on a pet monster of another student, earning him an award for special services to the school. During the summer of that year, Tom visited the home of his mother, where he learned that his muggle father had left her during pregnancy after she stopped using love potions on him. He then murdered his father and paternal grandparents in order to get revenge and cleanse his ancestry of muggles. Tom framed his uncle for the murders by using his wand to perform the killing curses and then altering his memory. As a trophy, Tom stole his uncle's family ring, which was proof of his family's descent from Salazar Slytherin, one of the founders of Hogwarts.
In terms of personality, Tom Riddle is manipulative, greedy, unloving, narcissistic, and obsessed with the Dark Arts. He was sorted into the house of Slytherin and adopted the wizard's beliefs regarding blood ancestry of witches and wizards. He detests both muggles and muggle-born wizards and prizes above all pure-blood wizarding ancestry though his father was a muggle. Also a trait of a typical Slytherin, he is manipulative and extremely ambitious, using his charm to get the things he wants. Despite having no empathy for other people's emotions, he understands how to act in order to seem sincere. Due to his being conceived as a result of a love potion, Tom is unable to understand the concept of love. Though he has many admirers and is popular amongst his peers, Tom does not have any friends. He does not consider others as people to connect with, merely as things to use and help him gain power. He craves power and knowledge, doing in-depth research on many taboo subjects, especially dark magic. He is not only greedy for power, but for material possessions as well. As a child at the orphanage, he stole from the other children, keeping the toys as treasures. He has a tendency to collect objects, especially stolen ones, as tokens of his achievement. With this combination of greed, ambition, wit, and manipulation, Tom Riddle is a formidable enemy.
1st person sample: Well, I have to admit, this is a situation I hadn't given thought to before. I have never considered going into outer space. I suppose it's really quite interesting, with other planets and stars and such. The technology here is...far more advanced than what the muggles have achieved on Earth. It's remarkable, though not entirely unexpected. I wonder -- is there magic involved with this? It's hard to tell.
Even so, this sort of magic -- if it is magic -- we don't have that either. At least, I've never heard about it. On second thought, I would like to learn more about this.
3rd person sample: Tom had mixed feelings at the news of his world being destroyed. At first, he was furious. Everything was gone, including Hogwarts, which he had come to consider his home. And with Hogwarts gone, his status at the school was completely meaningless -- the teachers he had charmed, the awards he had won, the support and followers he had gained. He would have to start again, build up a new reputation for himself, regain the respect of others. He was seething inside, careful not to let it show on his face.
On the other hand, it meant that all of the filthy muggles and mudbloods were gone as well. Tom felt a surge of triumph and satisfaction as he realized this. He was then a bit dismayed at the thought of all the pure-blood witches and wizards that had vanished, but quickly dismissed it. Surely there were wizards here that he could learn from. He would have to think of a way to find them -- he doubted the Statute of Secrecy applied here, but he couldn't very well shout his magical status from the rafters. Tom decided to patrol the hallways, on the lookout for others with wands, keeping his in plain view in order to attract them. In the end, he just looked foolish strutting down hallway after hallway carrying a rather fancy stick and wearing what looked like an over-sized bathrobe.
Questions?: No.
